In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty, in the wisdom of uncertainty lies the freedom from our past, from the known, which is the prison of past conditioning.
And in our willingness to step into the unknown, the field of all possibilities, we surrender ourselves to the creative mind that orchestrates the dance of the universe.
Like two golden birds perched on the selfsame tree, intimate friends, the ego and the Self dwell in the same body. The former eats the sweet and sour fruits of the tree of life, while the latter looks on in detachment.
The Mundaka Upanishad
The Law of Detachment
Early on in my journey of discovering meditation & yoga, I was introduced to a beautiful book. A book that today, still stands the test of time for my practice & life called: The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by Deepak Chopra & David Simon. As my first read was wondrous, the words on the page were just that. I had yet to step into the experience of the messages. Fast forward over a decade and this book still offers immense wisdom. Deeper understandings of the invitations peel back, layer after layer.
Today is Friday. A day that we're invited to align our intention & attention with a practice of detachment. In the book, the authors invite some key references to support this. Whether you have a practice of yoga, meditate or even have any interest in such matters, my intention here is to share this information, as always, as an invitation.
The Law of Detachment, reveals a great paradox of life. In order to acquire something in this world, you have to relinquish your attachment to it.
This doesn’t mean you give up the intention to fulfill your desire—you simply give up your attachment to the outcome.
Attachment is based on fear and insecurity. When you forget that the only genuine source of security is your true self, you begin believing that you need something outside yourself in order to be happy. ~ The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga
Bam. Just soak these words in for a moment. Today, as I engaged my morning practice, I was so aware of struggle. Struggle I am experiencing in key relationships, struggle in my business.
As I contemplated this invitation for today, there was a beautiful space that opened up inside. I could fully experience the layer of attachment I've been holding with "how these areas" , "ought to be unfolding'.
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga offer a daily mantra.
Our mantra & key focus for today is:
Om Anandham Namah. My actions are blissfully free from attachment to outcome.
The Law of Detachment, (as offered by the authors) correlates to voice & self-expression. At the level of the body, this law correlates to the area of the throat, aka, the fifth chakra. Our centre of choice.
From a CODE Model perspective I view this as a critical gateway of congruence & transition. To what degree does the the inside conversation I am having, match the one I am having outside of mySelf. Transitioning from who I've been, to the choice point of who I'm becoming, right here, right now.
Another layer of consideration is what I am taking in, through my senses (sight, sounds, taste, touch, smell, intuition). What am I noticing; what am I hearing. How is denial possibly influencing what you’re bringing in & what you’re putting out?
Denial is a magical strategy of the fifth charka. At the choice point, gateway of congruence & transition, we’re invited to be willing to see what you see, hear what we’re hearing and knowing what we know. Then, the choice is ours to both own & engage what's next.
When energy & information is flowing easily through our fifth chakra we're confident in our communication. When flow is stagnant, we may feel communicating is a struggle & that we're not being heard.
The color of the fifth energy center is blue.
It is associated with the elements of ether or space and the sense of hearing.
The seed mantra to support the flow of the the fifth chakra is Hum.
Astrologically, Friday as correlating with the planet Venus. Our cosmic archetype of love, beauty, money, security. Many themes that at times can invite deep attachments.
So, where to from here fellow travellers?
My invitation is to JOIN me today in exploring these invitations.
Ready to walk with another?
Consider the following inquires
In this moment if I were to release my grip of thinking & feeling that, this moment needs to be....then,
What is the most optimal choice, now?
What if everything IS unfolding perfectly?
What am I learning about my dance with attachment to outcome?
Here are a few invitations offered by the authors to activate intentions for the law of detachment.
1. Practice detachment. This is not about choosing to not give up your intention & desire, rather, your attachment to the result.
Today I will commit myself to detachment. I (choose to) allow myself and those around me the freedom to be as they are. I (choose to) not rigidly impose my idea of how things should be. I (choose to) not force solutions on problems, thereby creating new problems. I (choose to) participate in everything with detached involvement. (opened to what presents in the now).
2. Embrace uncertainty.
Today I (choose to) factor in uncertainty as an essential ingredient of my experience. In my willingness to accept uncertainty, solutions will spontaneously emerge out of the problem, out of the confusion, disorder, and chaos. The more uncertain things seem to be, the more secure I will feel, because uncertainty is my path to freedom. Through the wisdom of uncertainty, I find my security.
3. Surrender to the field of pure potentiality.
I (choose to) step into the field of all possibilities and anticipate the excitement that can occur when I remain open to an infinity of choices. When I step into the field of all possibilities, I will experience all the fun, adventure, magic, and mystery of life.
4. Engage your body as a co-creator.
Experiment with this exercise. Bring your attention to the area of your fifth chakra (your throat). With intention, choose to surrender, relax & rest with what presents. Image the colour blue in flow. Rising gently up from the area of the chest, all the way up and out the top of your head & flowing back down. As you experiment with this, silently repeat the correlating mantra of hum to yourself. Invite & allow what you see and hear to be here now. Choose to take in the information, breathing and resting inside, fully.
